Chiari 2 Malformation

A 1 year-old boy had a history of a meningomyelocele repaired shortly after birth, and obstructive hydrocephalus requiring shunting.

SHOW THE FINDINGS IN THE CHIARI 2 MALFORMATION

Elongated 4th Ventricle     Tonsillar Herniation    "Kinked" Medulla    Dysgenesis of the Corpus Callosum    Hydrocephalus

Axial T1-weighted with gadolinium. Note in the Chiari malformation that the brainstem and cerebellar tonsils descend below the foramen magnum. There are various types of Chiari malformations. In Type II, the malformation may be associated with midbrain malformations, aqueductal stenosis, and myelomeningocele.
