Leukemic Infiltration of the Cauda Equina

A 6 year-old girl presented with progressive weakness and sensory loss in both legs for three weeks. She had a recent history of acute lymphocytic leukemia treated with chemotherapy.

Show Enhancing Nerve Roots

(Left) Axial MRI T1-weighted image; (Right) Axial MRI T1-weighted with GAD image. Note on the contrast scan on the right, the nerve roots enhance with gadolinium. Nerve root enhancement can be seen in a variety of inflammatory and infiltrative disorders. Subsequent CSF evaluation demonstrated acute leukemic cells.
