NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT OF HYDROCEPHALUS

 

Medical treatment of hydrocephalus is not very effective, and is usually viewed as a temporizing measure.

Medications that decrease CSF production and reduce intracranial pressure

Acetazolamide

Furosemide

Medications that reduce intracranial pressure

Mannitol

Glycerol

Urea

Isosorbide

Medications that promote CSF absorption (not commonly used)

Hyaluronidase

Heparin

Urokinase

Intermittent CSF removal (e.g. serial lumbar punctures)
