Transverse Myelitis

A 23 year old woman presented with paresthesias of arms and legs for 2 days.  Examination showed a sensory level over the shoulders bilaterally and bilateral Babinski responses.

Oultine the Lesion

Sagittal and axial MRI images demonstrate an area of increased signal in the spinal cord at the C3-4 level.  The cord is not expanded.  Transverse myelitis may occur in multiple sclerosis, lupus, or may occur as an idiopathic autoimmune condition.
