Multiple Brainstem and Cerebellar Infarctions

A 75 year old woman developed the acute onset of ataxia, diplopia and confusion.

Show the Acute Diffusion Abnormalities

MRI Diffusion-weighted image. Note the high signals indicating acute infarctions in numerous areas: bilateral cerebellar, left middle cerebellar peduncle, superior cerebellar, superior pons and midbrain, along with one small focus in the left occipital lobe. MRA demonstrated diffuse intrinsic atherosclerotic disease of both vertebral arteries and the basilar artery.
