Lumbar Vertebral Compression Fracture

A 73 year-old woman presented with severe pain in her back. Here neurologic exam was normal other than severe paravertebral muscle spasm.

Show the Compression Fracture

(Left) T1-weighted sagittal MRI scan of the lumbar spine; (Right) T2 weighted MRI scan of the lumbar spine. Note the compression fracture of the L2 vertebral body. This most often occurs as a result of aging and osteoporesis, but can also be seen as a result of neoplastic infiltration or trauma.
